A senior faculty in the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Hyderabad, Appa Rao Podile has been elected as Fellow of the prestigious National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS).
This honour is conferred on Prof. Rao for his research contributions in the area of crop protection with special reference to his contributions in the area of biological control of fungal diseases of plants.
Prof. Rao’s research group found the ways to use bacteria or bacterially produced enzymes or the enzymatic products for control of plant diseases more by inducing natural resistance in the plant.
Last year Prof. Rao’s lab has filed a patent on one such process. He was already an elected fellow National Academy of Sciences which is the oldest science academies of India. He has been serving on the task force of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India on “Microbial Agents for Agriculture” for over seven years.
